Looking for some ideas re where to go with my 96. Have Heavy Breeather, and the Touring SE Exhaust put on @ delivery. All the reading I do points to an EFI tuner or maybe the Thundermax. Still under warranty too.

Tuner was the biggest upgrade in my 2007 GMC Sierra, so I'm guessing the same would be true with my HD [FLHX].  

You are right, a module is the next step without going into the motor. I looked at several before I settled on the Dobeck Performance EFI controller. I was impressed with the amount range available to me for adjustments of fuel and air. If you have a dealer install it you can have them adjust the fuel curve in the module to suit your riding needs. If you live anywhere near western Canada you need to go to Redline HD in Lloydminster and talk to the mechanic there about all you can do with this tuner. Otherwise George L. at Dobeck is excellent for everything you need, drop him a line.  

From what I've read,the newer bikes with O2 sensors don't need a tuner.I have an '04 ultra 88 in. with SE air cleaner,Wild Things cams,and Supertrapp slip ons.It had a Doherty Power PACC when it was dyno'd at 72.08 HP 80.81 Lb-Ft.The SE air cleaner seems to give me better throttle response and keeps the side of my bike clean.I am running a RevTech DFO(made by Dobeck).These will adjust your fuel only,not ign. timing or rev limit.If you are looking for every little bit of power,everyone says go with a Power Commander or SE Race Tuner.I decided to save some $ and I'm satisfied with my choices.If your bike runs good w/o a tuner,I'm not sure you will pick up much performance with a tuner.Just my opinion.Good luck.  

Air cleaner and pipes doesn't need to be remapped on 2007 and later bikes.  The base map and the O2 sensors can correct the AFR.  Any other added modifications will need a tuner and remap.

 

From talking with the guys at Harley, when you add pipes and air the 96's run hot and the ECM needs to be flashed to Stage 1 I'm tring to find out if some thing like the V&H fuel pac would work better but so far no luck.  

I did the ST 1 download.

Warranty on a $450 / month payment is a good thing for me.

SERT = +10 HP, - warranty gone.

Thinkin 103" ST 2 - which is warranty friendly.

Anyone wanna buy the exhaust and intake that the kit comes with? I can't order the kit with out it.  

I have an 09 flhx that i got 3 weeks ago. So far i have about 600 miles on it. The only performance thing that i have done is to put on vance and hines slip ons. It seems to run hotter than my 04 road king custom that i had before, with the same exaust. I am planning on getting a vance and hines air intake and the HD stage one down load. Will that cool it down some , or is the 96 just hotter than the 88? is anyone else running something similar. thanks.  

Hey vryquick. The local hd dealer told me that id be fine with the exaust. But if i did the air intake i would need the download. Are they just trying to get in my pocket or do i realy need it. The cost isnt the issue. I just want to know if it is needed.  

I specialize in mapping bikes.  A free flowing air filter and exhaust will not need to have the fuel injection modified.  The factory O2 sensors will be able to correct the changes.  Any more modifications such as cams will need some type of fuel injection tuner.    

The 96" do run hotter. Harley has a download that is suppose to help with the heat.  My 07 103ci is fine with the V&H Pro Pipe.
